Lowbed semi-trailers carry excavators, crushers and other construction machinery. Loading height, gooseneck design and ramp arrangement are configured to the equipment being moved.

Tell us the machine model and weight and we will confirm the loading height and axle arrangement.

Choosing a lowbed trailer for heavy plant

Lowbed trailers exist for one reason: to get the deck low enough that tall, heavy equipment clears bridges, cables and overhead structures along the route. On most moves the loaded deck height and the loading angle decide whether a trailer works, long before payload becomes the limiting factor.

The three numbers that decide the trailer

  • Loaded deck height — measured with your machine on board, not empty. This is what determines whether you clear overhead obstructions.
  • Loading ramp angle — steep ramps suit tracked plant; wheeled machines with low ground clearance need a gentler approach.
  • Axle group and steering — more axles spread the load, while steering axles reduce tyre scrub on tight site entrances.

Why a route survey is worth doing first

A lowbed that is legal on paper can still be unusable on the actual route. Bridge heights, overhead power lines, roundabout radii and the gradient of the site entrance all constrain the move. Buyers who send route details before quotation usually end up with a simpler and cheaper trailer than those who specify from the machine weight alone, because the survey shows where the real constraint sits.

Deck and ramp configuration

Fixed gooseneck, folding gooseneck and hydraulic ramp configurations each suit a different loading pattern. Fixed goosenecks are simpler and lighter; folding and hydraulic versions reduce the ramp angle for low-clearance machines but add maintenance points. The choice is made against the equipment you load most often, not the heaviest machine you might load once.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my machine will fit on a lowbed?
Check the loaded deck height against the lowest overhead obstruction on your route, and the ramp angle against your machine ground clearance. Sending the machine dimensions and a route description is enough for us to confirm fit before quotation.

Do I need steering axles?
Steering axles help where site entrances and junctions are tight, because they reduce tyre scrub and cut the turning circle. On long straight hauls with easy access they add cost without much benefit.

Can a lowbed carry containers?
It can physically, but it is an inefficient use of the trailer. Container haulage is better served by a skeletal trailer, which is lighter and purpose-built for twist lock mounting.
