Specifying a special vehicle around the job it does

Truck-mounted cranes, concrete mixers, excavators and water tanks share a category only because none of them is a standard haulage unit. Each is built around a task, and that task decides the chassis, the body and the auxiliary equipment far more than any headline specification does.

What these units have in common

  • The chassis carries equipment designed separately and then integrated onto it.
  • Payload capacity is shared between the cargo and the equipment itself.
  • Maintenance access is usually tighter than on a standard truck.
  • Auxiliary systems — hydraulics, PTO and water circuits — decide long-term reliability more than the engine does.

Matching the unit to the job

A truck-mounted crane is chosen against the lift chart at the radius you actually work at, not against maximum lifting capacity at minimum radius. A concrete mixer is chosen against drum volume, discharge height and the time between batching and placing. An excavator is chosen against digging depth, reach and the material being moved. A water tank is chosen against spray width and the number of passes needed per shift. In every case the working envelope matters more than the peak number in the brochure.

Chassis and body integration

Integrating equipment onto a chassis changes weight distribution, braking balance and frame loading. Units assembled without accounting for this tend to show problems in the frame and rear suspension rather than in the equipment itself. The integration is confirmed against the equipment supplier data before the order is placed, and the unit is inspected before it leaves the supply base.

Frequently asked questions

Can a truck-mounted crane be specified for a particular lift?
Yes. The lift chart at your working radius determines the crane size, and it should be confirmed before the chassis is chosen. Maximum capacity at minimum radius is rarely the figure that matters on site.

What decides concrete mixer drum size?
Drum volume follows the payload the chassis can legally carry, the discharge height required on site, and the time available between batching and placing. A larger drum is not useful if the legal payload cannot fill it.

Are excavators supplied with the same export documentation?
Yes. Excavators and other self-propelled equipment are documented and shipped on the same basis as the vehicles, with loading photographs and shipping documents issued against the actual order.
